Widowed for three years, Die pulls her troubled 15-year-old son Steve out of institutionalization after he is expelled for arson, fearing he’ll be lost in the system. Struggling financially and emotionally, she takes on home-based work while handling Steve’s violent outbursts and deep attachment to her. Their lives shift when Kyla, a stuttering teacher on sabbatical, enters their world. As she helps Steve, she finds herself equally transformed by the bond they all share.
